Layered security, sometimes called defence in depth, assumes that any single control will eventually fail. The goal is not perfection at one point but resilience across many.
Deterrence The outermost layer discourages an attempt before it begins: lighting, signage, visible uniformed officers and marked patrol vehicles. Most opportunistic crime is stopped here.
Detection If deterrence fails, detection must be immediate. Intruder alarms, motion analytics, thermal cameras and alert patrols shorten the window between an incident starting and someone knowing about it.
Delay Physical barriers, access control, turnstiles and secure zoning buy time. Delay only matters if detection has already happened, which is why these two layers are designed together.
Response Trained officers, a manned control room and rehearsed escalation turn an alert into containment. A response plan that has never been rehearsed is not a plan.
Recovery Post-incident investigation, evidential footage handling and process change close the loop so the same gap is not exploited twice.
When these five layers are designed as one system rather than bought piecemeal, security spend goes further and risk drops measurably.
